Ten comprehensive school pupils recently travelled to Germany to take part in an international art project.

Last month the teenagers, from St Cenydd Comprehensive School in Trecenydd, visited the German city Ludwigsburg – which is twinned with Caerphilly town – to participate in a week’s worth of art and culture workshops promoting cross-border art among youngsters.

Working with Gilfach artist, Tracey Moberly, the group jetted off to Germany to immerse themselves in the culture and learn new art techniques, joining other groups from the Czech Republic, Syria, Turkey, Afghanistan, Brazil, Albania, Iraq, and Bosnia and Herzogovina.

The youngsters stayed together in a youth hostel, and spent time together both during and outside of the sessions.

As part of the project, the young people toured Ludwigsburg with iPads capturing images they felt inspired by, and with specific colours pieced together 10,000 images to create 12 nation’s flags.

St Cenydd pupil Jessica Martin, said: “I enjoyed the experience and took so much from it. I particularly liked creating clothes for the fashion show and the new media project, taking pictures to make the huge flags.

“Hearing all of the different languages spoken it has made me realise I would definitely like to learn another language.

“After the week was over I went home, talking and smiling about possibly the greatest week away I’d ever had.”

Nicola Webber Head of Geography at St Cenydd, said, “The pupils were an absolute pleasure. I was so impressed with how they embraced every task they were given and made a huge effort to get to know the other pupils and try new foods.

“The work they created is outstanding and they were fantastic ambassadors for the school.”
