A man from Ynysddu was left with actual egg on his face after falling short during a world record attempt.
David Herbert, an egg exhibitor and self-styled poultry pundit, decided to take a bungee jump with a basket full of eggs to raise money for the Bedwellty Show.
Jumping 130ft from the Cleddau Bridge in Pembroke Dock on Saturday, September 2, David was aiming to set a new world record for the most amount of eggs left whole in the basket.
He said: “Well, I’m very vocal on Twitter about what I get up to egg exhibiting and showing poultry. I started at Bedwellty, and I decided to raise money for the show and try to raise awareness of egg showing and avian influenza.
“Ruth Wignall [ITV Wales presenter] was filming me at the Royal Welsh Show in July and challenged me to skydive with a basket full of eggs, so like an absolute idiot I agreed.
“I spoke to the people at Guinness World Records who gave me a list of requirements to set a record. They needed 50 eggs left in the basket for it to be a valid record. So I started off by putting 240 in the basket, but it was too heavy, so I reduced it to 150, which was around 10kg.
“I was scared witless. I’d never done a bungee jump before, so just took a leap of faith and ended up literally with egg on my face. I lost most of them on the way down, and at the end there were only five left which were still intact.
“I’m gutted it didn’t happen but it was an amazing experience nonetheless.”
Along with entering his eggs into shows across the country, David is keen to raise awareness about the issues avian influenza (AI) has on the industry.
He added: “Avian influenza made an appearance in Wales last year after migrating birds brought it over. We had to adapt the way we kept live poultry and birds, but there wasn’t really enough information out there about it. My record attempt was a jump into the unknown, and that’s what we need to tackle AI – fresh ideas and ways of dealing with it.”
