A mother is attempting to raise money for Diabetes UK by stepping out of her comfort zone and taking one million steps.
Heidi Halpin, from Caerphilly, is taking on the One Million Step Challenge for the charity after her six-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes earlier this year.
The event, which began on July 1 and ends on September 30, sees people taking at least 10,000 steps a day to reach their million mark in the three month period.
Heidi is well over the half-way point, and spoke of the benefits of the challenge.
She said: “I was certainly not a walker prior to this challenge and at times it has been tough. On the hardest days the thought of my beautiful girl Ruby keeps me going.
“As I have an office job it’s not always easy to be active. However, I’ve made an effort to increase my daily steps by doing things like walking to the post office, going for a walk at lunch time and even walking to and from work.
“I’ve only used my car six times since the challenge began, and will be donating the fuel money I have saved. My family have wanted to get involved too and the children are even checking my daily steps.
“I’m so happy to be raising money and awareness for Diabetes UK, and as an added bonus my fitness and wellbeing have really improved too.”
Joseph Cuff, Diabetes UK Cymru’s Fundraising Manager, said: “People can walk it, jog it or dance it. There is so much choice about how people can achieve one million steps. We’re really grateful to Heidi for joining #TeamDUK.”

Good mothers. In July of 2016. it was discovered that I got type 2 diabetes, By the end of the July month. I was given a prescription for the Metformin, I stated with the ADA diet and followed it completely for several weeks but was unable to get my blood sugar below 140, Without results to how for my hard work. I really panicked and called my doctor. His response?? Deal with it yourself, I started to feel that something wasn’t right and do my own research, Then I found Lisa’s great blog (google ” How I helped myself from diabetes ” ) .. I read it from cover to cover and I started with the diet and by the next morning. my blood sugar was 100, Since then. I get a fasting reading between the mid 70s and 80s, My doctor was very surprised at the results that. the next week. he took me off the Metformin drug, I lost 30 pounds in my first month and lost more than 6 inches off my waist and I’m able to work out twice a day while still having lots of energy. The truth is that we can get off the drugs and help myself by trying natural methods..
