School pupils from across Caerphilly County Borough have recycled almost 1.8 tonnes of old batteries as part of a European initiative.

Around 11,500 pupils from 44 schools played their part in making a positive impact on the environment by taking 1,792kg of old household batteries into school to stop them going to landfill.

The pupils competed with other schools to recycle the most batteries, with prizes awarded to those with the highest numbers at a special ceremony at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Ty Penallta headquarters.

St Helen’s Primary School in Caerphilly took the overall prize, while Deri Primary, Libanus Primary, Cwm Glas Infants, and Cwmaber Junior schools were also recognised.

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Cllr Nigel George said: “The hard work of schools, pupils, teachers and parents is fantastic, and really does have a positive impact on our local environment.”
