A community centre is planning to begin regular film screening events after being awarded £5,688 from the Big Lottery Fund.

Van Community Centre, in Porset Park, Caerphilly, applied successfully for the cash for a special blind to cover the building’s skylight.

The money was granted to the centre, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, by the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards For All programme.

As well as the blind, the money will also go towards putting on more events and activities at the centre.

Big Lottery Fund Grant Officer Janet Thickpenny said: “The Van Community Centre provides and coordinates activities for the three communities of Porset Park, Lansbury Park and Mornington Meadows and helps bring them together.

“Our Awards for All is our smaller grants programme for projects, such as this, so that community groups can extend their activities. It was clear there was wide support for this from the three communities.”

Pam Nelder, chair of the committee which runs the Van Community Centre, said volunteers were thrilled to have the funds.
