Caerphilly Christmas Market

Caerphilly’s Christmas Market has been cancelled today, Sunday, because of the snow.

The market had a successful first day yesterday, but the council, which has organised the event, said the weather had meant it could not go ahead.

A spokesman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “Unfortunately, due to a number of factors related to the deteriorating weather conditions that are forecast today we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Caerphilly Christmas Market.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment that this may cause.”

Caerphilly Castle has also cancelled it’s events for the day, including ice skating.

The lantern making workshop at Caerphilly leisure centre has also been cancelled because of the weather.

Regional forecast for Wales from the Met Office
Today
Breezy with outbreaks of snow persisting for much of the day giving further accumulations and the potential for significant disruption. In the south and southwest, rain or sleet is expected, with severe coastal gales. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Tonight
Snow becoming lighter and patchier overnight, while moving southwards. Clear spells developing in the north. A widespread severe frost with isolated freezing fog patches. Minimum temperature -8 °C.

Monday
Mainly dry and bright with some coastal showers in the west. It will be cold with some freezing fog patches slow to clear and some spots remaining below freezing. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

We live in a time where the people in charge always seek to protect us from the trivial but have absolutely no interest in tackling the important dangers. I have not skated for years but would consider a snowy day to absolutely the right, and most enjoyable conditions for engaging in this activity. I can’t wait to tell my friends in Canada. They will be dumbstruck.

Once again a little snow and Caerphilly grinds to a halt – Elf and Safety no doubt.
We should take a lesson from countries like Sweden and Norway.

I think you have got it right John, there is a fear that people will slip on the pavement during a council event and engage a solicitor to argue that the council should not be holding events when it is cold. I bet my food caddy is not collected tomorrow either.

I think you are spot on there.
I was puzzled to read last night a large number of schools would be closed across the region today.
When I was a schoolboy the only time schools would close at winter was if roads were unpassable because of snow or if the heating system broke down !

Same when I was in school. The only time I remember my school closed was when the coal bunker was empty and there was no heating. Otherwise it was snowballs at playtime.
