A sixth former who has managed to raise £7,000 for Velindre has been praised for his charitable efforts.
Connor Webb was inspired to do something to raise funds after his grandmother passed away from cancer.
Connor, who attends Bedwas High School, has organised a number of charity events over the past seven years as well as taking part in planned activities such as the Great North Run.
More recently Connor organised a charity run at his school for Wear Red for Wales and Velindre day.
Connor is currently head boy at the school and takes part in a number of extracurricular activities such as playing in the brass band and sports coaching. He also acts as a peer mentor and works with individual pupils on a weekly basis.
As well as getting involved in charity events Connor is also an active member of the community,he became a Youth Work volunteer at the age of 14 and has since gained a number of qualifications in that field. Earlier this year Connor was made an official ‘Ambassador’ for Velindre.
Connor said: “My community means a great deal to me so I try to get involved in as many activities as possible.
“I am grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to be a part of so many organisations. The school has been so supportive to me which has helped a great deal to raise my fundraising goals.”
He continued: “I still have a number of fundraising activities planned for the future including a charity bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.”
Peter Ward,headteacher at Bedwas High School,said: “We are very proud of Connor. He is a fantastic ambassador for the school,his family and charity he supports.
“His commitment to this community is an outstanding example for his fellow pupils to follow and we wish him all the best for the future as he readies himself for a new chapter at university.”
Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement Cllr Philippa Marsde added: “It is important that we highlight the fantastic achievements of our young residents.
“Connor is an exceptional young man who I have no doubt will go on to achieve great things. I want to congratulate him on raising such an impressive amount for charity and thank him for his positive contribution to our community.”
