Chinese New Year was celebrated by pupils of Derwendeg Primary School on Monday, February 12.
Parents joined pupils at the Cefn Hengoed school for a Chinese New Year party to celebrate the year of the dog.
Children from Year 3 and Year 4 performed Chinese songs, spoke Mandarin and shared their learning.
Parents also had the opportunity to work with their children to take part in paper-cutting, paper-folding, tasting authentic Chinese food and learning to write in Mandarin.
Artwork created by the pupils was displayed in the school hall for parents and Governors to view the positive impact the children have experienced from learning about the Chinese culture.
The celebrations took place thanks to the school’s Language Teaching Assistant from China,Mrs Xu has worked at the primary school for six months as a result of a British Council placement.
Headteacher Stewart Davies said: “Thank you to Mrs Xu for sharing her culture with the pupils and staff of Derwendeg Primary School, which has had a positive impact on pupils.
“I am delighted that we were able to celebrate Chinese New Year and to learn about the Chinese culture,which places the pupils in good stead to become ethical and informed citizens of not only Wales, but the rest of the world.”
Cllr Philippa Marsden,Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement said: “Pupils were encouraged to wear red, which symbolise good luck in China and to take part in a range of activities and crafts which provided a fun learning experience.”
