Caerphilly Observer has been named Independent Community News Service of the Year for a fourth consecutive time at the 2018 Wales Media Awards.

Judges said Caerphilly Observer, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary in print, was “a proper local news provider” in a world where local has become something of a negative in mainstream news.”

They said the newspaper informs on all issues affecting the community and had strong journalism and writing throughout.

Organised by the Journalists’ Charity, the awards were announced at a black-tie event on Friday, March 23, at the Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff. The awards celebrate and promote great journalism in Wales and were hosted by BBC Wales’ Lucy Owen.

Richard Gurner, Publisher and Editor of Caerphilly Observer, said: “Winning the category for a fourth consecutive year was completely unexpected.

“Once again I’d like to give a huge thank you to all our readers, advertisers and supporters.”

In total, 23 awards were handed out with sports journalist Peter Jackson being honoured with the Outstanding Achievement award.

The awards are sponsored by Comtek Sorrento Networks, Aston Martin, Camelot, Google, the National Union of Journalists, NUJ Training Wales, Welsh Government and Western Power Distribution. They are organised by sponsors Spencer David, and further support has come from Celf Design, Cleartech Live, Express Signs, Qatar Airways, Specialist Models, Mercure Holland House Hotel and Natasha Hirst Photography.
