Staff at Caerphilly-based housing association United Welsh has raised £13,329 for charity Cancer Research Wales.

In a year of fundraising, staff took part in a range of activities to raise money after United Welsh voted to make Cancer Research Wales their corporate charity.

Cancer Research Wales was a cause that was close to the hearts and minds of many staff after office manager Jane Love’s husband Stuart was diagnosed with Myeloid Leukaemia in August 2015.

Jane said: “In true Stuart fashion, he remained strong and courageous over his seven months of treatment, but unfortunately in March 2016, a post-transplant virus took hold and in just nine days proved too much for his immune system.”

Last September, Jane completed a Himalayan trek at the heart of the world’s highest mountain range in Dharamsala, home to the Dalai Lama.

The trek raised more than £3,000 for the charity alone.

Other fundraising efforts by United Welsh staff included a team taking part in the Cardiff-based 10k obstacle course ‘Invncbl’ and a three-day 185 mile bike ride from North to South Wales.

Jane added: “I’m so thankful for the support from colleagues and friends to raise this huge amount of money for the charity.”

Cancer Research Wales focuses on prevention, early diagnosis and better treatment of cancer to benefit patients in Wales and beyond.

Katie Killoran, Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research Wales, said: “The support of organisations like United Welsh enables us to fund some of the most innovative developments in cancer treatment, early diagnosis and cure.”

United Welsh has nominated Vision 21 as their 2018 Charity of the Year.

Established in 1986, the charity provides quality environments for people with learning needs to take up work-based training.
