Around 270 young people got to experience the thrills of rugby at the Six Nations Disability Rugby event held at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach last month.

Hosted by the council’s Sport Caerphilly and Trinity Fields School, the Disability Six Nations event has grown and this year hosted youngsters from 19 schools and clubs.

The morning saw players develop new rugby skills before taking part in a fun tournament in the afternoon.

Former Wales rugby player, and now Head of Participation at the WRU, Ryan Jones, a longstanding supporter of the event, also attended and helped inspire participation in a variety of new activities, including learning new skills and hitting tackle bags.

Sports Minister Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas also visited the event to gain first-hand experience of the benefits the Disability Six Nations event has for the youngsters who attend.

Council leader Dave Poole said: “This ever-popular event provides sensory activities which are of great benefit to the young people and it was wonderful to see them develop in confidence throughout the day. Well done to everyone involved in organising such an excellent event.”

The event was also supported once again this year by regional Dragons Rugby, and company Orange Box,who sponsored the event for the 12th year.
