Caerphilly Castle was lit up in yellow last night to celebrate cyclist Geraint Thomas’ Tour de France win.

The Welshman, who went to Whitchurch High in Cardiff, is due to win the famous race today in Paris.

As the leader and holder of the race’s yellow jersey, tour convention means other riders will not challenge him during the final stage.

Wales’ other castles were also lit up in celebration of Thomas’ win.

Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns said: “His grit and determination over the last few weeks demonstrates how much he wants to win this epic race.

“He is an inspirational role model for future generations and is on the brink of cementing his status as one of the greatest Welsh athletes of all time.”
