Gritter overturns in icy conditions

A gritter overturned between Senghenydd and Nelson

A gritter got into trouble on the road between Senghenydd and Nelson, slipping on the ice and overturning.

The accident happened at around 3am on Wednesday, January 30.

A spokesman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said the road, classed as Bwlch Carnygelli, had already been gritted three times within a 24 hour period.

The driver, who was unharmed, was returning for a fourth run when the accident occurred.

Cllr Sean Morgan, Cabinet Member for Highways said: “Fortunately the driver is fine and did not suffer any injuries, but this just goes to show the danger that our dedicated employees face in order to keep our roads clear of snow and ice.

“This was a very experienced driver, but between the third and fourth gritting treatments the hill had iced over and this demonstrates that road surfaces can still be dangerous, even when gritted.

“I would urge all motorists to keep a close eye on the forecast and take great care when travelling across the county borough in these conditions.

“The council’s website offers lots of information and advice as well as more information about our winter maintenance activities.”
