Six dogs from Caerphilly County Borough have achieved first place finishes at this year’s Crufts.

Roughly 27,000 dogs took part in this year’s events at the NEC in Birmingham.

The event, which is run by The Kennel Club, started on Thursday, March 7 and finished on Sunday, March 10.

Dog groomer Paul Lang, from Caerphilly, has been going to Crufts since 1996.

Mr Lang’s seven-year-old Polish lowland sheepdog, Tilly, finished first in the veteran bitch category.

He said: “She’s been entered every year now and has four first place finishes in the last five years.”

Mr Lang, who attended this year’s competition with his wife, Christine, and his daughter, Gemma, added: “We enjoyed being there. It’s always a good day out.

“Tilly loves it too. She loves seeing the other dogs.”

Meanwhile, Chris Moes and his wife Rhian Williams, who are both from Gilfach, have competed at Crufts for the past 16 years and entered seven dachshunds this year.

The couple have been breeding dachshunds for almost 30 years from their kennels.

Four of their dachshunds achieved first place finishes this year.

Mr Moes told Caerphilly Observer: “We have one of the best kennels in the country so I’m disappointed we didn’t do better.

“We go every year and it’s alright, but it’s hard work.”

Mr Moes’ and Mrs Williams’s dogs won the Bitch Challenge Certificate, Best Puppy, Best Puppy in the bitch category and the Junior Bitch category.

Laura Raymond, from Pontllanfraith, also secured a first place finish. Her Rhodesian Ridgeback won the Minor Puppy category.

Tim Bouse, from Ystrad Mynach, also achieved a second place finish in the Limit category with his Bedlington Terrier.
