A learner driver accused of killing a shopper allegedly knocked down by a Land Rover in a supermarket car park has been released on bail.

Window fitter Timothy Higgins, aged 21, is accused of the manslaughter of farmer Christopher Gadd, 48, in the Sainsbury’s car park.

Deaf Mr Gadd died from head injuries in the car park at Pontllanfraith, near Caerphilly, earlier this month.

Mr Gadd, of Mynyddislwyn, was a passenger in the VW car with his brother Paul, 49, on their way to buy fish and chips.

Higgins, previously of Wylllie, near Caerphilly, was charged with the manslaughter of Mr Gadd. He was also charged with not having a full driving licence or having insurance.

Prosecutor Christian Rose said window fitter Higgins denies manslaughter.

The court heard a witness saw Mr Gadd’s vehicle pull in behind a Land Rover Freelander who appeared to be leaving the space.

Mr Rose said: “It appeared an argument had taken place.”

Higgins had been remanded in custody but was granted bail at Cardiff Crown Court and will live at an address in Warwickshire.

He will face a trial at Newport Crown Court in April.
