Number of peak-time rail carriages on Rhymney line to double

News | Rhys Williams | Published: 09:00, Thursday April 11th, 2019.

The number of train carriages on the Rhymney line during peak hours is set to double from May.

Currently, peak time trains on the Rhymney line only have two carriages, but this is set to increase to four from the middle of next month.

Caerphilly AM Hefin David, who has previously raised the issue of overcrowding on trains in the Senedd, said: “Many people will be all too familiar with the nightmare morning and evening commute.

Caerphilly AM Hefin David met with Transport for Wales to secure additional train carriages

“I’ve been campaigning for more seats at peak times on the Rhymney to Cardiff line since becoming the AM for Caerphilly and have made the case for these improvements in the Senedd Chamber and to the franchisee, Transport for Wales.”

“Transport for Wales have acknowledged the concerns I’ve put to them on behalf of my constituents, so they’ve committed to doubling the amount of carriages at peak times to address overcrowding on our busy lines.”

In March, Welsh Government’s Economy and Transport minister, Ken Skates AM, announced that refurbished trains will be coming to the Rhymney line in May.

From 2023, 95% of journeys will be made on new trains, half of which will be assembled in Wales. Around 600 new jobs will be created with 30 new apprenticeships annually.

TfW took over the running of Wales’ railways from Arriva in October last year.

James Price, TfW chief executive, said: “In addition to our £800m investment in brand new rolling stock, we also recognise there is an urgent need to increase capacity on some of the busiest routes on our network.

“As a result, we are pleased that despite the UK national shortage of compatible rolling stock, we are close to securing additional stock for use on the Rhymney line on a short-term basis. This will mean that services at the busiest times will have double the number of carriages than they have had previously.”
