The lorry caught fire near the Pwllypant roundabout

The driver of a lorry that burst into flames on the Pwllypant roundabout in Caerphilly has been discharged from hospital.

The fire happened at around 5.10pm on Monday,April 15.

Gwent Police officers, along with South Wales Fire and Rescue and Welsh Ambulance attended the scene where the lorry fire was distinguished.

Diversions were in place while emergency services dealt with the vehicle.

Police said the lorry driver, a 55-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with burn injuries to his hands and face and was discharged the following day.

Eyewitness Claire Jenkins was a passenger in her friend’s car at the time.

She told WalesOnline: “Me and my friend Michelle had just finished work and as we approached the Cedar Tree roundabout we could see black smoke.

“I initially thought it was the bed and breakfast.

“As we pulled onto the Cedar Tree roundabout I could see the lorry engulfed in flames. The cars stopped in front of us and I called the fire brigade.

“They advised they were en route and I could hear them behind us. I could see cars still driving passed on the other side.

“The cars in front of us kept started to move so we moved off. Just as we were alongside Michelle said “that’s going to blow” and the next minute it blew.

“Cars on the opposite side backed up the duel carriageway as it blew out sideways . The heat was so intense you could feel it over the other side of the road.”
