Pupils at St James Primary School in Lansbury Park, Caerphilly, have had the chance to be ‘mini police officers’.

Twenty-two pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 took part in scheme run by Gwent Police. Its aim is to engage with youngsters to build better relationships and to give pupils a taste of what being a police officer is like.

As part of the programme, children took part in a parade and other activities organised at Ystrad Mynach Police Station.

To reward their efforts, pupils were presented with mini police uniforms and certificates.

Nikki Dargie, headteacher at St James, said: “It is wonderful to see so many of our young pupils feel honoured and having a sense of pride in their school and local community, wanting to make it a nicer place to live, learn and work.”

Inspector Gavin Clifton from Gwent Police said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the Mini Police Officers to help make a difference within their community and to educate their fellow pupils in their school and feedback on the scheme has already been so positive.

“We are very proud of all of the pupils involved and would like to thank St James for their support.”
