Plas-y-Felin Primary School in Caerphilly town has won the double after their success in the Sport Caerphilly Primary School World Cup.

All 47 schools taking part in the competition, held on Wednesday, June 26, was assigned a country to represent, with Plas-y-Felin representing Colombia.

Pupils from Years Five and Six beat Rhymney’s Ysgol-y-Lawnt, who were representing Wales, on penalties in the final to win the cup.

The competition, which involved seven-a-side teams in games ranging from six to eight minutes, was held at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach.

More than 500 pupils took part in the competition.

Tyn-y-Wern Primary School in Trethomas represented Turkey and won the award for the best dressed at the tournament.

Cllr Nigel George, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Service, said: “The Primary School World Cup Football Festival is a fantastic event that inspires hundreds of pupils each year to get hooked on sport from a young age.

“Taking part, having fun and keeping active is what the Sport & Leisure Services strides to achieve for all of Caerphilly’s residents. Having an event that allows us to reach so many young people is a fantastic opportunity and an event we are proud to host from one of Caerphilly’s finest assets.

“Congratulations to all pupils who took part and a special mention to this year’s winners Plas-y-felin Primary.

“I would also like to thank the Sport Caerphilly and Leisure Lifestyle teams as well as the volunteers from Coleg-y-Cymoedd on the planning, supporting and running of such a well organised event – a fantastic effort from everyone involved.”

Plas-y-Felin won their first piece of silverware earlier in the season, beating Tir-y-Berth Primary School 1-0 in the final of the Cluster League.

The Cluster League, also organised by Sport Caerphilly, saw around 60 primary schools from across the borough compete in five regional groups, with the highest placed teams qualifying for the finals, which were also held at the Centre for Sporting Excellence.

Plas-y-Felin teacher and football coach, Matthew Seamons, said: “It’s a really big achievement for our school. I believe it’s the first time in our history that we’ve done the double.
“It’s huge for our pupils and staff.

“It’s something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
