Head teacher wins Road Safety Wales award

The headteacher of a primary school in Caerphilly town has won a Road Safety Wales award.

Lynn Griffiths of Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Caerffili received the prize for the school’s ‘walking bus’ initiative.

The initiative encourages children to walk to school, with the aim of reducing the traffic generated by the daily school run and improving the health and wellbeing of pupils.

More than 20 pupils take part in the ‘walking bus’, which operates every Friday morning and collects children from various points along the way to school.

Mr Griffiths said: “It is a great honour for our school to receive this prestigious award. Being a platinum accredited eco school since 2015, we have always had a clear focus on the importance of sustainability and the need to encourage our school community and pupils to walk, scooter or cycle to school.

“To this end, we have established a highly effective walking bus which has been in existence for 15 years and it is pleasing that we still have between 20 and 30 pupils participating every Friday.”

Cllr Sean Morgan, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, said: “Congratulations to Lynn Griffiths on his achievement. His dedication and enthusiasm for his walking bus is truly admirable.

“I am pleased that Caerphilly County Borough Council continues to support the development and operation of a number of organised walking busses across the county borough.”
