A Caerphilly-based software development firm is expected to double its turnover this year.

Big Lemon, based at Welsh ICE on Caerphilly Business Park, specialises in designing and building bespoke software, apps and bots – taking advantage of the increasing demand by businesses to offer digital services.

The company has grown rapidly since launching in 2014 when it moved from offering web design services to full software development. In the last two years it has seen its turnover increase by 42%. The doubling in turnover, expected this year, is down to the firm winning several high-profile contracts.

In the last two years the business has won contracts with several large organisations, from developing digital products for Admiral and University of Wales Trinity Saint David through to designing apps for NHS Wales. As well as recently hiring a new project manager, the team expect to create another two full-time positions in the next 12 months.

Co-founder and Designer Kieran Abbott said they expect the growth to continue as businesses become more aware of the efficiencies modern software can provide.

He said: “Artificial Intelligence, automation and the Internet of Things are terms that most people working in business probably wouldn’t have been familiar with seven years ago. However, as products, systems and methods of working continue to evolve, they become more integrated into our day-to-day lives.

“One of our largest competitors at the moment is actually Excel, as so many businesses are using spreadsheets for all their internal processes and tasks. This can be incredibly inefficient as the software simply isn’t designed for that.

“We are finding that as businesses begin to explore other solutions they are saving time and resources which they can then put back into their enterprises. We fully expect to see our recent growth continue, and already have a number of exciting projects lined up into 2020 and beyond.”
