Carnival parade in Jones Street, Phillipstown

A community carnival near New Tredegar has been branded a success by organisers.

The carnival was held in Phillipstown on Saturday, August 17 and was the first carnival held in the village since 2012.

The event was organised by the Phillipstown Residents’ Association.

The carnival procession, which was headed by Carnival Queen Jessica Prosser, saw scores of people walking the streets in fancy dress.

Organiser Cllr Mark Evans said: “On carnival day, the highlight was the procession around the streets, giving some of our more elderly and less mobile residents the opportunity to clap and cheer as the procession passed by.

“Despite the difficulties in this community, there are very few places where the community spirit is still so strong. The carnival has given us the opportunity to prove that community spirit is still alive and well and needs to be nurtured.

“We are grateful to all our volunteers and the many residents who made the event happen.”

Chairperson of Phillipstown Residents’ Association, Cllr Eluned Stenner, said: “The community spirit we have witnessed here in the last few days has been great. Some people have said that they have got to know new neighbours and have thoroughly enjoyed all the street meetings, making costumes and painting their decorations for the carnival.

“We have also witnessed lots of people visiting Phillipstown just to see the flags and window decorations.”

Cllr Stenner added: “The Residents’ Association is grateful to Caerphilly County Borough Council, particularly the cleansing team, for assisting the volunteers in clearing the litter after the event and also the council wardens and Gwent Police for their support and attendance on the day.

“Special thanks to the National Lottery funded BCT Wales and the New Tredegar Community Council for their financial assistance that allowed the event to take place.”
