Paper straw firm turns to work schemes for new staff

The company which supplies McDonald’s with its paper straws has recruited 12 new employees from local work programmes.

Transcend Packaging, based at the Dyffryn Business Park in Ystrad Mynach, used Caerphilly County Borough Council as part of its recruitment drive.

The council’s regeneration team worked with Transcend to conduct interviews with candidates from schemes such as Communities for Work, Communities for Work Plus, Bridges into Work and Inspire 2 Work.

The 12 successful applicants have started a 16 week induction programme on temporary contracts with a view to gaining fulltime and permanent employment in the near future.

Caerphilly Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Sustainability, Cllr Sean Morgan, said: “We are working in partnership with businesses and industry across the county borough to seek to increase the availability of quality jobs and identify opportunities to enhance access for residents to those jobs.

“This is an excellent example of how partnership working can benefit employers and the wider community to boost the economy. It has been a pleasure working with Transcend during this process.”

• Caerphilly Council deliver a number of employment programmes to provide support, guidance and training for unemployed residents of the borough as well as offering opportunities for those already in work to increase their employability skills and enable them to progress in their role.
