Eight-year-old Sara has swam 1,770 lengths

An eight-year-old girl from Trethomas has swam the ‘length of the English Channel’ to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Sara Bradshaw swam a total of 1,770 lengths of a swimming pool in memory of her uncle Huw, who died from cancer in January.

Sara started the challenge in September and completed it on Sunday, November 3.

She had been doing the challenge at Bedwas Leisure Centre and Caerphilly Leisure Centre.

Sara’s mother, Valerie Bradshaw, said: “I’m amazed. Sara has lots of determination and grit.

“She has a very kind heart and always picks up on emotions and makes sure everyone is okay.

“Sara was very close with her uncle.”

Sara previously took part in a race for life alongside her family, raising £200 for charity.

Sara has already exceeded her original target of £300

Ms Bradshaw said: “Sara is very keen on sport. She had already done a running challenge so she wanted to try a swimming challenge.

“She was inspired by seeing people who had swam the channel on the television, such as David Walliams – Sara has read a few of his books.”

Ms Bradshaw added: “We’ve had a really positive response. Sara spoke to around 200 pupils about it in school.

“Family and friends have been really supportive of her. Her friends at school were always asking her how many lengths she’s done.”

Sara has set up a JustGiving page to help her raise money for her chosen charity and has exceeded her original target of £300.
