Bargoed’s Lauren Price has been named amongst a record number of women to be shortlisted for the 2019 Wales Sports Personality of the Year award.

Price’s shortlisting comes just six weeks after the middleweight’s AIBA World Championship victory over European champion Nouchka Fontijn, who had initially won the fight but after an appeal by GB Boxing, the result was overturned in Price’s favour.

The 25-year old’s unique journey to becoming Wales’ first ever women’s world champion saw the boxer compete in taekwondo, kickboxing and football, where she earned an astounding 52 caps for the Welsh national team.

After her world championship victory, Price said: “It all feels like a bit of a dream at the minute. I have dreamt of being world champion for most of my life, so to finally achieve it feels unreal.

“It is definitely the high point of my career. I have got Commonwealth gold, European Games gold and World Championship gold, so I just need to make sure I get the big one next year (Tokyo 2020) to complete the set.

“The coaches and all the staff have been amazing. They really believed in me, so I just want to thank them for everything.”

Price’s fourth medal in a row at a major championships equalled that of former GB Olympian Nicola Adams, and her achievements have not gone unnoticed.

The winner of Wales Sports Personality will be announced on Tuesday, December 10, with telephone and online voting open until 6pm on Sunday, December 8.
