Pupils from Plasyfelin Primary School, Caerphilly town, have planted trees and collected litter in and around Churchill Park.
The 30 pupils, aged between nine and ten, were joined by teachers, governors, parents and Morgan Jones ward councillors.
Teacher Mike Lewis said: “The Year Five pupils have been studying the environment as part of their topic this term. As part of the study the children decided to take on a local aspect and decided that they would go out into the local area and litter pick.

“The kids love learning in a different environment. The more we can utilise the outdoors the better, especially with so with all the computer games there are.
“A lot of the kids have been inspired by David Attenborough’s Seven Worlds One Planet.
“We’re lucky to have such big grounds around the school. Many schools in the area are surrounded by concrete.”
Headteacher Mark Jones said the activity was part of a school eco project.
He said: “They love it. They embrace anything like this.
“As a school we’re taking part in more and more eco projects like this.”

They were also joined on the day by members of the recently-formed Churchill Park Residents’ Group, which helped organise the activity.
Group member Hayley Newell, who has lived in Churchill Park for 12 years and is a parent governor at the school, said: “I was speaking to other parents and neighbours and we have similar concerns.
“We want to make positive changes on the estate. We’re trying to do nice things on the estate as a community.
“We set up a group on Facebook and have been speaking with local councillors.”

Ms Newell added: “The group is only a month old and is progressing quickly. Rather than complaining separately, it’s good to team up and come up with good ideas.
“We’re hoping to plant flowers near the train station soon.”
Cllr Jamie Pritchard said “The pupils at Plasyfelin are very environmentally friendly and it was great to see them again looking after their local area. We work well with Plasyfelin school, local residents and the children who altogether contribute to make a positive difference.”
Cllr Shayne Cook said “We’ve been working with a new residents group in Churchill Park who helped organise this event. Thank you to everybody who took time out to join in.”
