Bedwas scored four tries and earned a bonus-point win as they beat Ystalyfera 31-15 away from home in the WRU National Championship.

On a sunny but cold afternoon in the upper Swansea Valley, Bedwas opened the scoring after five minutes.

A try from Jordan Rees, bursting through covering tackles before diving in at the corner, gave Bedwas a 5-0 lead, before Dion McIntosh upped it to 7-0 with a conversion.

However, the hosts hit back almost immediately after, with winger Bowdy Davies scoring a try.

Ystalyfera full-back Steffan Castle scored the conversion to draw the hosts level.

Bedwas had the chance to retake the lead, but McIntosh missed a 35-metre penalty attempt.

However, McIntosh had an opportunity to make up for his miss ten minutes later, and made no mistake as Bedwas creeped back ahead.

In the 29th minute, Bedwas scored their second try of the afternoon as prop Lewis Davies grabbed his first try in Bedwas colours. McIntosh converted to increase the deficit to ten points.

But the hosts cut the gap shortly after, with Castle scoring a penalty after a high tackle from Bedwas.

But the visitors had the final say in the first half, scoring their third try when flanker Owen Jones ran in from deep to dive across the line for five points.

McIntosh converted to give Bedwas a 24-10 lead at half-time.

Bedwas opened the scoring in the second half with their fourth and secured a bonus point in the process. Flanker Jones scored his second try of the game.

McIntosh converted to extend Bedwas’ lead to three converted tries.

Ystalyfera closed the scoring after a try from winger Davies with around ten minutes remaining on the clock.

The conversion was missed as the scores were wrapped up at 31-15.

However, a few minutes before the end, Ystalyfera second-rower Ioan Jones suffered what looked to be a serious neck injury.

After treatment, medics decided it was too risky to move him and an ambulance was called. The referee blew to signal the end of the game.

However, it has since been confirmed by the club that the injury was not serious and the player is in good spirit.

Bedwas remain in third in the table as they prepare for the next fixture away to league leaders Pontypool on Friday, January 31.
