Work is underway to improve biking trails at Cwmcarn Forest as part of a multimillion pound project to boost tourism.

Existing bike trails are set to be made bigger, with 5.5 kilometres of extra trails set to be introduced at the 1,400-hectare site.

A new ‘blue’ trail, which will be suitable for families, is also being added and is expected to be completed by the spring.

The works are part of the £4.6m Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal Adventure Triangle project delivered by Caerphilly County Borough Council in partnership with Torfaen Council, Welsh Government and the Canal and River Trust.

Caerphilly County Borough Council said the work to improve the offering at Cwmcarn Forest will bring more than £1.8m of capital investment to the borough.

A number of new additions have been added to the site recently, including an adventure play hub and six luxury lodges.

In 2014, Cwmcarn Forest Drive closed to the public so that 70% of the trees there could be cut down to prevent the spread of a tree disease.

All bike trails were reopened by November last year.

Cllr Lisa Phipps, the council’s cabinet member for homes, places and tourism, said: “Cwmcarn Forest is already a flagship destination in the county borough.  The latest improvements will offer even more opportunities for those seeking outdoor adventures – from local residents to tourists visiting the county borough.”

Islwyn Assembly Member Rhianon Passmore recently spoke in the Senedd, asking the Welsh Government to “ensure that Wales and the world know that the beautiful Cwmcarn Forest Drive was once again fully open for business.”

Ms Passmore said: “The new ‘blue’ cycle route is designed for families to enjoy and I know this will be enthusiastically embraced.

“I am already thrilled to see so many families sharing photos of themselves exploring Cwmcarn Forest and recording their walks and bike expeditions on such social media platforms as Facebook, Instagram and Strava.”
