A group of teenagers have had their perspectives changes after ‘sleeping rough’.
Nineteen pupils from St Martin’s School, Caerphilly, made their own shelters and spent the night sleeping out in the school grounds.
The challenge, which happened on January 31, was part of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification and showed pupils a glimpse of what life could be like on the streets.
Someone who is homeless can often find themselves walking up to ten miles a day, and pupils tried to mirror this experience by walking three miles in the rain at night.
They also had basic soup and roll rations in line with a typical soup kitchen meal.
The pupils were asked to write a reflection of their experience . Some of the comments made included: “Everyone deserves a home.”
One pupil said their opinion on homeless people had changed entirely.
Through their challenge, the pupils managed to raise almost £1,000 for homelessness charity Llamau.
