A Christian resource centre celebrated its 20th anniversary through “20 days of kindness”.

From Thursday, January 23 to Tuesday, February 18, activities were organised at The Rock cafe in Church Street, Bedwas.

Another act of kindness was proposed every day. Among them, collecting food for homeless people, writing letters to persecuted Christians, offering books for children, collecting feminine hygiene products for women’s refuge or food and nappies for baby banks.

Charity group named Fundraisers of the Year

The Rock is composed of the cafe, the shop, a youth room, a prayer room, a conference room and a flat for visiting Christian missionaries.

The Rock opened on January 22, 2000 and the cafe was renovated in January 2019.

Manager for four years and trustee since the beginning, Sonya Palmer, 42 said: “Our customers sought to become our friends. We see people so much. It’s just day-to-day becoming friends with a cup of tea. It is getting to know people becoming friends.

“We met new people because of the 20 days of kindness. It was a good community thing.”

Ms Palmer trained as a primary school teacher. She said: “It was a big difference going from very small children to learning how to cook. There is a lot to learn and at the beginning, apart from teaching children, I was just absolutely useless.”
