Markham’s Gerwyn Price picked up his first darts title of 2020 at the PDC Players Championship Six in Wigan.

The Iceman beat Michael Van Gerwen 8-7 in a tense battle in the final held on Sunday, February 23.

Price’s tenth PDC title, which has a £10,000 prize, came after a loss to Peter Wright on Saturday in the Players Championship Five but a 94 checkout against Van Gerwen secured victory.

After rushing out to a 4-1 lead, missed doubles over two consecutive legs nearly cost the former Neath rugby player, with Dutchman Van Gerwen fighting back for a deciding leg.

And with ‘Mighty Mike’ throwing first, Price admitted to feeling the game was over but kept his cool to produce his second ever win over the World number one.

“Going into the deciding leg, with Michael throwing first, it looked like the game was gone,” Price said after the match.

“I just wanted to make sure I gave myself a shot for the match and I made sure I took it.

“I truly believe now that if I hit my doubles I will win matches against Michael, Peter [Wright] or whoever, my scoring game is up there, if not better than them.

“If you go back to when I started out I threw the towel in and lost games like this but I stuck in there today.

“I’ve played five events this year and I’ve got to three finals so I’m doing alright so far in 2020.”
