Nikki Shane Edmunds has been jailed for four years and eight months

A man has been jailed for four years and eight months for his role in a “terrifying series of events”.

Nikki Shane Edmunds, 32, of Rhymney Close, Pontllanfraith, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on February 5.

Armed with a meat cleaver and a metal bar, Edmunds attacked 62-year-old Gerald Wilson in Pontllanfraith on December 4.

Mr Wilson was driving his car when Edmunds and his girlfriend Kerry Jones were walking in the road. After Mr Wilson shouted at them to get out of the way, Edmunds pulled him out of the car and attacked him.

Mr Wilson managed to get back into the car, but the defendant continued to attack the car and threaten Mr Wilson before he could drive off. He suffered bruising and injuries to his head, with the car dented and the windscreen cracked.

Around 20 minutes later, Edmunds covered his face with a scarf and walked into the home of Sam Rose in Pontllanfraith.

After demanding Mr Rose give him his car and car keys, Edmunds removed the scarf, with Mr Rose recognising him as a relative. Edmunds then fled.

A day earlier, Edmunds had been involved in a high speed police chase in Newport, having stolen a car from a driveway.

During the car chase, Edmunds hit a car carrying a two-year-old girl and her family.

Edmunds pleaded guilty to charges of affray, attempted robbery, criminal damage, possession of a blade article and possession of an offensive weapon, as well as dangerous driving.

He has been banned from driving for four years and four months.

Meanwhile, Jones, 27, of Church Street, Rhymney, admitted a public order offence, breaching a community order for aggravated vehicle taking and allowing herself to be carried in a car.

DC Nicky Holland, said: “This was a terrifying series of events for all involved.

“Edmunds showed no regard or concern for the people involved in these matters, which included very young children who are still affected by what happened.

“The sentence imposed reflects the seriousness of the offences for which he was charged and the danger Edmunds posed to the local community.”
