Caerphilly Castle to be lit up blue for NHS workers

Caerphilly Castle will be lit up in blue to show support for NHS workers, Welsh Government body Cadw has said.

Cadw, which maintains the castle and other heritage sites across Wales, said the castle will be lit up every night, starting at 8pm on Thursday evening (April 9).

In a post on social media, Cadw said: “We are lighting the largest castle in Wales blue every night to show our support for the fantastic work that NHS and all key workers are doing for us.”

The body also encouraged the public to take part in the ‘Clap for our Carers’ at 8pm on Thursday to show support for NHS staff on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.

St Martin’s ward councillor Colin Elsbury, who mooted the idea to light up the 13th century castle, said: “It’s fantastic. The NHS has always meant so much to people in this country – the work they’re doing is outstanding.

“We all need to support the NHS and what they’re doing for us, and we need to listen to government advice to stay home. Hopefully we can get through this sooner rather than later.”
