A weight limit is set to be placed on a railway bridge in Caerphilly town centre after concerns were raised during an inspection.
Transport for Wales (TfW) carried out the inspection in October last year and requested a 7.5 tonne weight limit be placed on the bridge, which is on Mountain Road and goes over the Rhymney railway line.
A Ford Fiesta weighs around 1.3 tonnes, while a single-decker bus can weigh between 11 and 14 tonnes.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has said it will work with TfW in implementing the weight limit, which is set to come into force “as soon as the required signage can be manufactured and delivered”.
A TfW spokesperson said the weight limit will be introduced “in order to protect the structure and ensure the safety of both road and rail users”.
The spokesperson added: “We appreciate this may cause inconvenience. We’re working closely with Caerphilly County Borough Council to determine the next steps.”
TfW is set to carry out work to strengthen the bridge within the next few months.
As a result of the weight restrictions, some bus services are likely to be affected. The council has said it will publish details of affected bus routes “shortly”.
