Warning issued after scammers target residents

Residents are being warned after reports of scam emails trying to get them to hand over their bank details

Scammers pretending to be from Caerphilly County Borough Council or HMRC have reportedly been contacting residents saying a refund is due.

In a statement, Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “If you receive unexpected emails, telephone calls or text messages advising that your council tax account is in credit and asking for your bank details in order to send you a refund, please do not provide your bank account details in these circumstances.

Scammers using coronavirus to con vulnerable residents

“If our council tax team do telephone you about a refund, we will always ask you to telephone us back through the main council switchboard number 01443 815588 before you provide your bank details to us.”

People who want to find out if they’re eligible for a refund can contacr the council’s tax office can be contacted on 01443 863006 or counciltax@caerphilly.gov.uk

Issues can be reported to the council’s trading standards team on 01443 811300, or by visiting caerphilly.gov.uk/tradingstandards

    I have received two calls saying they are from amazon,please be aware amazon do not phone customers,just hang up .
