Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr

Seven patients at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr currently have Covid-19 – all on a single ward.

An Aneurin Bevan University Health Board spokesman confirmed the number to Caerphilly Observer after we asked if there had been any outbreaks at the Ystrad Mynach hospital.

The health board said strict infection control measures are in place and that there have been no new cases at there since Saturday, October 10.

Caerphilly Observer asked the health board what the situation was at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr following an announcement there had been an “outbreak” of Covid-19 at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

Fourteen patients from three different wards have been affected with Covid-19.

In a statement published yesterday about the Royal Gwent, the health board said: “There are no staff affected in the outbreak wards and no patients from these wards have needed to be admitted to Intensive Care.

“The hospital outbreak has been declared on the advice of the Infection Prevention and Control Team and the Lead Infection Control Doctor.

“Infection control procedures are being implemented to minimise the spread of this highly infectious virus and this includes the reintroduction of a ‘no visiting’ policy at the hospital, with the exception of visits agreed for Maternity and Paediatric patients.”

A recent study of 1,500 hospital cases of Covid, led by King’s College London, revealed that one in eight patients treated for the disease caught it while in hospital. The study included Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr and the Royal Gwent.
