Caerphilly Castle can be a fairly daunting place on an autumn night and that’s without Frankenstein or the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.
For those who dare, Halloween comes a week early as Cadw and Chapter Arts Centre show special screenings of the horrors in Caerphilly Castle’s Great Hall.
The films are part of a series of pop-up cinema screenings at some of Wales’ most impressive monuments this autumn, after a sell-out debut earlier this year.
Eye-catching surroundings, live soundtrack performances and striking special effects will help create a complete cinematic experience for moviegoers in the impressive shadows of the 13th Century building.
But fear not, for those who don’t relish being scared in a place where the Green Lady resides, people can watch family-friendly screenings in the afternoons.
The 1971 Roald Dahl classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory shows at 5pm on Friday October 24, while the 1939 adaptation of The Wizard of Oz can be seen the following day at the same time.
James Whale’s 1931 version of Frankenstein starts at 8pm on the Friday, with Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, from 1956, shows on Saturday at the same time.
Ken Skates, Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “By staging classic films within the setting of some of Wales’ most impressive monuments, we bring together heritage and the arts – this made for a sell-out combination earlier this year and we hope to see a repeat performance this autumn.”
Tickets cost £12/£10 for the evening showings or £6 for the afternoon and are available from www.chapter.org or by calling 02920 304 400.
