A temporary business rate relief scheme has been backed by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet.

The Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Rate Relief Scheme is part of a financial package announced by the Welsh Government in March.

Businesses won’t need to apply for the scheme, with eligible ratepayers having the relief applied as a credit on their rates bill for the 2021/22 financial year.

Pubs, restaurants, gyms and hotels are among the businesses that will be eligible for the scheme, which will provide support to businesses in the retail, leisure and hospitality industries with a rateable value of £500,000 or less.

Shops, opticians, pharmacies, post offices, petrol stations, dry cleaners, funeral directors, takeaways, nightclubs and cinemas will also be eligible.

Councillor Sean Morgan, Deputy Leader of the council and Cabinet Member for Economy and Enterprise, said: “We are doing all that we can to issue the support to businesses as and when it becomes available.

“This has been a huge task over the past year creating brand new systems to support the new grant and relief funds, but it is vitally important that we continue to act fast and support the business community with every resource we have.”

Anyone who thinks they might be eligible for the scheme can contact the council on nndr@caerphilly.gov.uk.

More information about the scheme can be found on the council’s website.
