Police have confirmed that no arrests were made after a “serious” threat was made towards a councillor.

Earlier this month, Caerphilly County Borough Council issued a statement condemning online abuse, after police were called to investigate the threat.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “On April 9, we received a call reporting concern relating to the nature of some comments made on social media.

“We’ve made enquiries into this and spoken to the parties involved.

“No offences requiring further investigation have been identified on this occasion.”

Gwent Police spoke with two people about the threat.

The council did not reveal which councillor was threatened, but said: “We will not tolerate abuse, threats or intimidation towards our colleagues.

“Unfortunately, there are a growing number of keyboard warriors out there who find it acceptable to make abusive, threatening or inappropriate comments.

“We want to send a clear message that the council will not tolerate this behaviour and action will be taken against those responsible where appropriate.”

The council spokesperson added: “The coronavirus pandemic and the associated restrictions that we have all experienced over the past 12 months are no doubt testing our patience and heightening frustrations, but there really is no excuse for this type of behaviour.

“Let’s continue to be kind to each other as we continue to navigate our way through the biggest challenge we have ever faced.”

Gwent Police Superintendent Carl Williams said the force “is committed to tackling all forms of threatening behaviour and abuse that is targeted towards anyone, including those that take place online”.

He added: “We’re committed to ensuring our communities are safe places and welcoming for all, and that no one should have to fear harm or abuse in their personal or professional lives.”
