19-year-old wins gold medal for Great Britain at shooting competition

A 19-yar-old from Abertridwr has won gold for Great Britain at an international shooting competition in Germany.

Callum Jones was one of three competitors representing Great Britain at the World Tour Target Sprint German Open.

He competed in the Junior Men’s Individual Championships at the event, which was condensed into a much shorter period of time due to major storms being forecast in the area.

Jones’ GB team mate, Emily Shawyer, also won gold at the event.

GB team leader Rob Shawyer said: “Callum’s performances and the way he focused his adrenaline was outstanding.

“He’s such a strong runner and his shooting is so consistent, which is a credit to his hard work and commitment to his training.”

Jones won his first race by a large margin, and clinched gold in his second race, seeing off competition from Italians Marco Ammirati and Mirco Melandri, who picked up silver and bronze respectively.

Following their gold medal wins, Jones and Emily Shawyer competed together in the Mixed Pairs competition, finishing fourth and narrowly missing out on a medal.

The event, which was organised by the International Shooting Sport Federation, was originally meant to be held last summer but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It took place in Dingolfing, near Munich.

Jones competes in the Target Sprint discipline, which is fast-paced and combines running with target shooting.

Throughout the pandemic, he has had to fit his training regime around coronavirus restrictions.

A qualified plumber, Jones will be joining the Royal Marines in November for nine months, having passed his medical examinations during the pandemic.
