Bargoed extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 33-15 win at home to Maesteg Harlequins in the WRU Championship Cup.

However, it was defeat for Bedwas, who were beaten 21-12 away to Trebanos in the WRU Challenge Plate.

Bargoed 33-15 Maesteg Harlequins – WRU Championship Cup

Bargoed ended Maesteg Harlequins’ unbeaten start to the season by extending their own winning streak in the WRU Championship Cup on Saturday, October 16.

Bargoed opened the scoring through an Ali Gardiner-Key try, with Josh Prosser scoring the conversion.

The hosts extended their lead eight minutes later, with Matt Thomas breaching the Quins’ try-line. Prosser added the extras to give the hosts a 14-0 lead.

The visitors pulled back a try to cut the lead down to nine points.

Bargoed were dealt a blow soon after, when Darren Humphries was forced off through injury. He was replaced by Steff Jones.

However, Bargoed remained on top in the game, with two quickfire tries from hooker Rhys Buckley giving them a 26-5 lead at the break.

The visitors came out for the second half strongly, scoring a try in the 42nd minute to reduce Bargoed’s lead to 16 points.

Bargoed hit back and hooker Buckley secured his hat-trick. Prosser’s conversion put Bargoed 33-10 ahead.

Maesteg pulled one back later on, but it did little to change the outcome of the match.

Bedwas let a first-half lead slip away as Trebanos stormed back to gain a deserved win on a mild afternoon in the Swansea Valley.

The afternoon started well for Bedwas, with Matty Bancroft landing a penalty from the halfway line to give the visitors the lead.

Both sides lost control at crucial times but two further Bancroft penalties in the 14th and 19th minutes respectively put Bedwas in control.

Trebanos pulled one back with a penalty kick in the 26th minute, but Bancroft notched his and Bedwas’ fourth penalty of the half five minutes later.

Trebanos scored a second penalty shortly before the half-time break to cut Bedwas’ lead at the break to 12-6.

In the 54th minute, Trebanos took the lead after a converted try. The lead was extended by a further three points thanks to a penalty kick.

Bedwas got close to the hosts’ tryline but were unable to come away with the points to show for it. Instead, it was Trebanos who scored next – increasing their lead with a try out wide to take a 21-12 lead.

The hosts held on to consign Bedwas to their first Challenge Plate defeat.
