Bargoed RFC earned a bonus-point win in a 56-19 rout of Tata Steel
Bargoed RFC earned a bonus-point win in a 56-19 rout of Tata Steel

Tata Steel 19-56 Bargoed, WRU National Championship

Bargoed maintained their grip on the top of the table with a crushing victory over struggling Tata Steel.

The hosts started well and opened the scoring after three minutes with a try in the corner after poor defending from Bargoed.

But the bulls responded strongly and after a period of pressure, back rower Grant Rogers crashed over from close range, with Steffan Jones converting to take the lead.

A second try for Bargoed came soon after when a clever chip from Josh Prosser saw centre Steffan Jones touch down and convert to make it 14-5.

But the Port Talbot-based Tata Steel bounced back and scored their second try, which was converted to close the gap to 14-12. However, Bargoed’s grip on the game continued as the visitors scored again through James Locke – with Jones converting.

Bargoed ran in another try before the interval, when Geraint Edmonds scored from close range and Jones added the extras to increase the lead to 28-12 and secure the bonus point.

The game was all but sealed after the break when winger Dylan Williams scored out wide as Jones once again made no mistake with the conversion.

Edmonds added to his try tally with another close range effort and Jones again converted to make it 42-12.

The rout continued as Jones scored another try, which he converted himself, following a sin-binning for Tata Steel.

James Leadbeater scored the final try of the game from close range while Jones kept his 100% kicking record with the conversion.

The game became increasingly scrappy and when a fight broke out in the Tata 22, the home side managed to score a consolation at the other end to end the game at 56-19.

Bargoed will host Penallta in the Mid District Cup quarter-finals at Bargoed Park in their next match, which will be played on Thursday, March 17.
