The Russian invasion of Ukraine has provoked widespread condemnation throughout the world.

Almost three million people have now fled the country.

The humanitarian crisis has seen communities up and down Caerphilly County Borough respond with kindness.

The message from those organising aid for refugees is that cash donations are now needed rather than physical items.

Caerphilly MP Wayne David said: “We have seen a tremendous level of support from those in the community, however this has caused a massive logistical problem that cannot be avoided.

“The simple fact is that it’s almost impossible to transport material goods into a conflict zone. This is why we are encouraging people to send money to registered charities instead.”

As well as financial support, Mr David and the Rev Dean Roberts of The Parish Trust, based in Trethomas, have both spoken to Caerphilly Observer about the need to house refugees in the borough.

Whilst the decision to accept refugees into the country is ultimately made by the UK Government, Mr David is confident more can be done.

He said: “Whilst the government’s position is unclear on how many refugees we will see in the UK; I’m putting pressure on them to allow more in.

“Preliminary work has been done with the council to potentially re-house those fleeing, but at the moment we don’t know when that could be.”

Senedd Member Hefin David, also voiced his support.

He said: “As a community, we need to focus long-term on how we can best support the people facing this situation right now, as well as those who will be homed in Caerphilly for safety in the coming months.”

Rev Dean was also behind the idea, having received plenty of support from those within the area.

He said: “People’s hearts are open to refugees that are fleeing from something so horrific. I’m sure that the county is willing to play its part.

“The media coverage has allowed everyone to see the war in pictures, something that hasn’t always been available in the past.”

The Parish Trust has agreed that a candle-lit vigil could be held over the next few weeks, uniting the county’s support behind those in Ukraine.

The leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Philippa Marsden, added: “We have a long proud history in Caerphilly of supporting those in need, including providing sanctuary for those fleeing war and persecution.

“We empathise deeply with those affected by the atrocities taking place in Ukraine and are committed to offering our support, in line with the advice offered by Welsh Government.”
