Firefighters tackling the blaze in Brynawel

Firefighters are tackling a second grass fire in Caerphilly County Borough within the last 24 hours after a blaze in Brynawel, near Wattsville.

In a statement, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 10.40am on Tuesday, March 22, we received reports of a grass fire in Brynawel, Wattsville.

“Crews from Risca, Aberbargoed and Malpas Stations are currently in attendance and are using specialist equipment to tackle the fire, including hose reel jets and fire beaters.”

Thick black smoke can be seen in the area.

There have been unconfirmed reports from residents that a small garage may have been destroyed in the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed.

It is the second grass fire in the borough in less than 24 hours, with the mountain above Abertridwr catching fire on Monday evening.
