Bargoed celebrate their title win

Bargoed clinched the WRU National Championship title with a bonus point victory over Trebanos, running out 36-0 winners and bringing their final points total to 56.

Bargoed knew they had their work cut out after a spirited Trebanos side recently beat Bedwas at the Principality Stadium to lift the Championship Plate. Due to a number of absences however, Trebanos had four youth team players in the squad.

Bargoed started well with an early try for prop Keegan Bale after five minutes. Trebanos were under pressure and conceded a penalty and yellow card after 11 minutes.

Bargoed took advantage with Calum Jones deservedly crossing for a try after 19 minutes to lead 10-0.

Bargoed’s third try came after 22 minutes, with Steff Jones making the initial break and Dylan Williams getting his second try in two games. Jones converted to make it 17-0.

Bargoed got the all-important bonus point try on 29 minutes when good work by Dylan Williams created space for James Leadbeater to score, and the home side led 22-0 at half time.

The second half saw Bargoed score early with James Leadbeater putting centre Jordan Howells in after a good driving line-out. Jones converted to make it 29-0. They scored again after 54 minutes with Howells getting his second, again converted by Jones.

Bargoed came out on top 36-0 – which resulted in them getting the bonus point victory and winning the National Championship title for only the second time in their history.

Club chairman Neil Carter said: “We knew that Trebanos would put up a fight and they certainly did so – I take my hat off to them.

“However, although it wasn’t a great performance by us we did play some good rugby at times. The players and coaches have worked extremely hard this season and deserve the plaudits.

“It was great to get our hands on a trophy after coming so close in the cup final at the stadium a couple of weeks ago.”

Bargoed’s final game of the season is against Ystrad Rhondda in the Mid District Cup final Wednesday May 18.
