More than 400,000 low-income households in Wales will be able to get a £200 payment to help cover rising energy costs this autumn and winter.

The Welsh Government has said it is investing £90m towards its Fuel Support Scheme due to the cost of living crisis.

Previously, around 166,000 households on Universal Credit, legacy means-tested benefits and working tax credits were eligible for a £200 payment from the 2021/22 Winter Fuel Payment.

The scheme’s expansion means it will be able to help households on child tax credits, pension credits, disability benefits, carers allowance and contributory benefits. It will also be available to those receiving support from the Council Tax Reduction Scheme.

Wales’ Social Justice Minister, Jane Hutt, said the scheme was being extended to help people struggling to make ends meet.

Ms Hutt said: “We know a lot of households are feeling anxious and worried about their rising energy bills, so we hope this extension of our Welsh Government Fuel Support Scheme to many more people will provide some comfort in these challenging times.”

Social Justice Minister Jane Hutt added: “We are targeting the Fuel Support Scheme at low-income households and extending the number of those eligible, as we understand how the winter months can be the hardest of the year and families face the difficult choice of heating or eating.

“We are committed to supporting the most vulnerable and doing everything we can to ensure they can get through this difficult moment.”

The announcement has been welcomed by Caerphilly’s Labour Senedd Member, Hefin David.

Dr David said: “I would encourage everyone to have a look at the Welsh Government website to see if they are eligible. They can then apply through the council.

“Energy prices are looking very bleak and this is expected to worsen come the winter, so this payment will be a big help to those who are struggling the most.”
