Family fun day returns for third year in aid of child disability groups

Ystrad Mynach Park Fundraiser will return for the third time this Sunday

Ystrad Mynach Park Fundraiser returns for a third year this Sunday in aid of child autism and disability groups Sparrows ALN and Valley Daffodils, who help more 2,000 families between them.

Originally set up in 2017 by Rhiannon Stone, who is now a Labour community councillor in Tir y Berth, the fundraiser was in aid of a much-loved children’s playground which was torched by vandals.

After a successful event, Rhiannon decided to continue the fundraiser at Ystrad Mynach Park with this year’s money going to charity.

Rhiannon said: “We’ve had lots of good feedback on social media which is great to see. We hope to raise between £1,500 and £2,000.

“There will be local businesses, stalls, a funfair and Hengoed Rocks – which me and my husband run. It should be a great day.”

The fundraiser will be between 10am and 5pm on Sunday August 7 with a cheque due to be presented to the charities next week.

If all goes well, Rhiannon is planning on expanding the event from next year. She said: “We’re looking to set up a three day-event at Blackwood Showfield – which will be even bigger and better.”

Rhiannon concluded: “Without the help and support of the people behind the scenes at these fundraisers, none of it would be possible. In my eyes they are the true heroes of the community we live in.”
