Bargoed 68-0 Tata Steel, WRU Championship Cup Round 1

Bargoed have cruised into the second round of the WRU Championship Cup with a crushing 68-0 victory over Tata Steel on Saturday, October 15.

The Bulls opened the scoring at Bargoed Park in the seventh minute through centre Daf Carter. His try was improved upon by the boot of Steff Jones, whose conversion put the hosts 7-0 up.

Two more tries followed suit, with Duane Dyer crossing the line twice, with Jones adding the conversions again as Bargoed stormed into a commanding 21-0 lead with 24 minutes played.

Prop Aaron Elliot was next on the scoresheet for Bargoed, before Matthew Lewis and Dai Evans got in on the act before half-time. Jones converted two of the three, giving Bargoed an unassailable 40-0 lead at the interval.

Try number seven came after the break, with Rhys Thomas crossing the line and Matthew Lewis converting.

After a few substitutions, Bargoed broke past the 50-point mark, with replacement Tom Rice next to get his name on a growing list of the afternoon’s try scorers. Josh Prosser adding the conversion this time around.

Despite being 54 points down, Tata Steel kept battling and put pressure on Bargoed in their own 22 – but a costly mistake led to a Bargoed counter attack, which resulted in back-row Charlie Davies piling further misery on the Port Talbot-based outfit. Prosser converted again to give Bargoed a 61-point advantage.

The scoring was rounded off when replacement Geraint Edmonds scored Bargoed’s tenth try of the day. Prosser’s conversion sealed a resounding 68-0 win – sending the Bulls into the second round of the cup.

Bargoed return to WRU National Championship action on Saturday, October 22, traveling to face Ystalyfera away from home.
