After celebrating its 50th anniversary in October last year, Bedwas Trethomas and Machen (BTM) Brass Band has the chance to lift some silverware this Saturday in the Welsh Open Brass Band Entertainment Championship.

Created in 1972, the band plays out of a small warehouse on Newport Road, Bedwas, where more than 50 members of all ages come together to form one of the most successful brass bands in Wales.

The band has performed at some iconic venues, such as the Royal Albert Hall, National Eisteddfod of Wales and St David’s Hall.

Carolyn Jones took her son, Tim, to try out in the band when he was just eight-years-old. 28 years later, Carolyn is now club secretary and Tim plays solo euphonium for the band.

Ms Jones spoke to Caerphilly Observer about what made the band so successful: “There has always been a great mix of ages here and that has created a great environment.

“It started off very local like most village bands, but now we have members coming from all over south Wales.”

With 25 youth players at the club, the future of BTM Brass Band is in safe hands; but it was actually its history that was celebrated last year through an anniversary party.

“We invited all the past and present players together for a meal last year,” Ms Jones said. “It was a nightmare to organise but it was great to see all of the old faces.”

One of the oldest faces at the club is founding member Jeff Hutcherson, who is now its conductor. He will be hoping to lead the club to victory this weekend in the Welsh Open Brass Band Entertainment Championship.

She said: “We’ve qualified for this tournament 24 of the 25 years it has run. It’s taken very seriously with a £1,000 prize for the winners and several individual awards.

“The endless practice this week makes you question why you do it, but it’s a great event and we always have fun.”

Fourteen brass bands will compete to be named the best in Wales at the Riverfront Theatre in Newport this Saturday, with the event starting at 11am.

Visit the band’s website for more information on how to join.
