International Women’s Day has been marked with an “afternoon of entertainment and celebration” in Caerphilly town centre – despite the snow.
As part of the celebrations, an event was organised by domestic abuse charity Threshold DAS at the Bandstand in Castle Court shopping centre.
What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.

Singer Kaylee Equeall, who is from Caerphilly, sang on the day. She was meant to be joined by the Rock Choir and Tir y Berth Primary School’s Glee Club – but they all had to pull out due to the wintery weather.

The event gave people the chance to learn more about the work of Threshold DAS, which offers free courses on topics such as building confidence, understanding mental health and stress, customer service, environmental issues and more.
Lisa Miles, who is a tutor with the charity’s education team, said the event went “fantastically well, despite the snow”.
Lisa, who helped organise the celebrations alongside the charity’s project coordinator Gail Hughes, said she was worried when she woke up and saw the blanket of snow covering the town – but those worries were soon eased.
“Considering the snow it was a really successful day – girl power prevailed.
“There was plenty of people out and about in town.”
She added: “Kaylee stayed for longer than we booked her for and people were coming out of the shops to hear her sing – she was even taking requests.
“I can’t commend her enough.”
Lisa also thanked councillors Jamie Pritchard, Anne Broughton-Pettit and Charlotte Bishop, who all turned up to show their support for International Women’s Day, alongside Police Community Support Officer Rhiannon Collins.

Lisa said the charity will be looking to do something similar to mark International Women’s Day again next year, as well as something to mark White Ribbon Day in November.
What is White Ribbon Day?
White Ribbon Day is marked each year on November 25 to raise awareness of men’s violence against women and girls.
